L-3 Acids, Bases and Salts Flashcards
(15 cards)
Compounds can be classified into three distinct classes
Acids, Bases and Salts
Why are all acids and bases not tasted it touched
as some of them harm the body
Acids and bases are differentiated by
indicators and their characteristic chemical reactions
What is an indicator
a chemical which indicates by means of sharp change in colour, nature of solution
Define acids
compounds which contain one or more hydrogen atoms and when dissolved in water, produce hydronium ions the only positively charged ions
______ is common in all acids
Hydrogen
Hydrated hydrogen ion which exists in solutions of acids
hydronium ion
Classification of acids
Based on their sources
Based on their molecular composition
depending on their strength
depending on their basicity
Acids based on their sourced
Organic acids
Inorganic acids
Define organic acids
Obtained usually from plants
Also contains carbon along with hydrogen
Why are organic acids also called weak acids
because they do not ionise completely in solution
so they contain ions as well as molecules
Define inorganic acids
Usually obtained from minerals
do not contain carbon
exception carbonic acid
Why are inorganic acids also called strong acids
they ionise completely in solution, producing a high concentration of hydronium ions
contain only ions
why is carbonic acid used in soft drinks
non corrosive, weak mineral acid
