L1 - Fundamental Particles Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is the relative mass of a proton?
1
What is the relative mass of a neutron?
1
What is the relative mass of an electron?
1/1836
What is the relative charge of a proton?
+1
What is the relative charge of a neutron?
0
What is the relative charge of an electron?
-1
Which number is the mass number and which is the atomic number?
mass - the bigger number
atomic - the smaller number
What is the mass number?
the number of protons + neutrons
What is the atomic number?
the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
How do you know the number of electrons?
it’s the same as the number of protons neutral (check atomic number)
How do you calculate the number of neutrons?
mass number - atomic number
What are ions?
Atoms of the same element with the same number of protons and neutrons but a different number of electrons
More electrons means a negative charge and less electrons means a positive charge
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
Isotopes have the same chemical properties, but can have different physical properties (such as density)
