L10 - Tumor Virus Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
Describe the steps to the life cycle of viruses.
A
- Viral entry:
- Interaction between virus and host cell receptor
- Endocytosis into endosome
- replication of viral genome: NP-coated (-) strand RNA enters nuclei and used to make (+) strand which can further be used to make (-) strand - Viral replication:
- virus take control of host cell’s replication mechanism
- susceptibility vs permissibility (determines outcome of infection) - Viral shedding:
- after exhausting all the host cell’s resources, virus progeny are released - Viral latency/lysogenic virus:
- virus hide within the cell and remains inactive until external stimulus
2
Q
Describe how viruses respond to temperature changes.
A
3
Q
Why cant viruses replicate independently?
A
Viral genome lacks genetic elements (centromere)
4
Q
What is pleiotropy?
A
Used to describe proto-oncogene where a single gene activation is sufficient for cellular transformation
