L2- Global Energy Use Flashcards

1
Q

Why does climate influence energy use?

A

In colder climates (such as Canada), more energy is used per capita as compared with people in Spain. This is because homes have to be heated for longer. In hot climates( U.A.E), air conditioners are required, which also pushes up the energy usage per capita.

Q

How do sectoral shifts impact the energy usage?(4)

A

Developing countries such as India/ China consume a lot of energy per person. The secondary industry requires vast quantities of energy to sustain the manufacturing. Countries such as the UK, with primarily tertiary industries have lower energy consumption as demand declines.

Q

How does population relate to the increasing energy demand?

A

The population is increasing exponentially in areas, which means more people require energy to sustain themselves, thus by increasing the overall energy demand, worldwide.

Q

“Development variations impact the demand for energy.” Explain the statement. (4)

A

Countries such as Malawi with primitive, traditional societies rely less heavily on energy sources due to simpler lifestyles. Whereas HEDCs and countries in the high- mass consumption stage, need energy in large amounts as they have more advanced lifestyles with cars and technology.

Q

Price of energy has an impact on the demand of energy. Why?

A

When energy is cheaper due to technological advancements or new reserve discoveries, more people consume energy as it is more affordable. Vice- verse with higher prices.

Q

The supply infrastructure (National Grid) in the UK impacts the demand of energy. Explain how the supply infrastructure can impact demand? (3)

A

Advanced countries with better infrastructure can distribute the energy they produce or buy more effectively, which makes it cheaper and easier to use energy. Thus by, increasing the demand.

Q
How does a rising MAC population impact energy use? (2)
(MAC= Middle class and Affluent Consumers)
A

MAC consumers have a large disposable income, which results in them buying many luxuries, which require a lot of energy to produce and sustain such as Cars, laptops and ACs.

Q

Assess which factor has the greatest impact on the energy usage? (8)

A

Start by talking about the different factors:(Scroll down)

1) Sectoral shift- Primary to secondary ( increased demand to sustain manufacturing) use China and India as examples
2) Development variations- HEDCs (USA -21% of global energy use every year) Advanced technology and cars/planes require immense amounts of energy for production and sustenance.
3) Climate- colder countries need a lot of energy to heat up homes/ cars. Hot countries need a energy for ACs- (Qatar)

Assess( come to conclusion):
Which has the greatest impact and why? Or do factors work in cohesion and the energy use is impacted by theses several factors.
