L2 - Physics and Physiology Flashcards
(18 cards)
Ambient pressure is
simply the pressure that is around you at the moment
Absolute pressure is
total pressure measured against a vacuum e.g on surface it is 1 bar
Gauge pressure is
measured on a gauge calibrated to zero at sea level.
Absolute pressure =
Gauge + Atmospheric pressure
Absolute Pressure =
(depth/10) + atmospheric pressure
Boyles law states that ‘The volume of a given mass of gas will vary inversely as to its
absolute pressure providing the temp stays constant.
List the body’s air spaces (5)
Ears, sinuses, lungs, stomach and intestines, teeth
Middle ear features (2)
Air-filled cavity, connected to throat by Eustachian tube
Purpose of Eustachian tube?
allows you to equalize the pressure of air in middle ear with ambient pressure
Total Lung capacity
6 liters
Residual volume is
the 1-1.5 liters of air that always remains to keep them in basic shape
Vital capacity is
the remaining liters of air after subtracting the residual volume that can be exhaled and inhaled in a respiratory cycle.
Tidal volume is
the amount of air actually being inhaled and exhaled
Dead air space is
the small amount of air that did not make it to the lungs on the first breath so will remain (lower in oxygen, higher in CO2) until the next.
What is the main stimulus to breathe?
Rising level of C02
What does PFO mean?
Patent Formane Ovale
Define PFO?
Where the foramen ovale present in atrium septum fails to close after birth. In divers it has been associated with increased risks of decompression sickness and cutis marmorata.
What priciple is used when owkring out how to use lifting bags underwater?
Archimedes where 1 liter or water equals the 1kg up thrust of an object
