L3 Clearance Flashcards

Q

What is the importance of GFR?

What is a pergect GFR marker and examples?

A

It gives a rough measure of functioning nephrons.

decreased GFR could be a sign of kidney disease

The perfect GFR marker is freely filtered but not reabsorbed or secreted. Inulin clearance or creatinine clearance are used (creatinine slightly less accurate because some is secreted)

Q

What are two ways creatinine can be used to estimate GFR?

A
  1. Calculate GFR by CCr
  2. Use PCr to estimate GFR.
    - when GFR is halved, PCr doubles
