L46 Organisation and Classification of Nerves Flashcards
(5 cards)
what is the nervous system split into and what do they include?
CNS - brain (forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain) + spinal cord (31 segments)
PNS - peripheral nerves
what are the functions of the CNS and PNS?
The CNS receives, processes, interprets, and stores information and sends messages destined for muscles, glands, and organs.
The PNS transmits information to and from the CNS by way of sensory and motor nerves.
how is the PNS divided?
divided into 2 systems:
Somatic Nervous System (sensory + motor components)
Automatic Nervous System (ANS) which is made up of sympathetic, parasympathetic and enteric&cardiac plexuses
how do the functions of the autonomic nervous system and somatic nervous system differ?
ANS - involuntary processes inc HR, Respiration, digestion + pupil contraction, without conscious direction. sympathetic = fight or flight, parasympathetic = rest and digest
SNS - carries sensory info from sensory organs to CNS + relays motor commands to muscle, controls voluntary movements
what are the characteristics of a neurone?
