L5 Bioenergetics Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted from one form to another.
What happens to entropy during energy transfer?
Entropy increases, as stated in the second law of thermodynamics.
What is ATP’s role in cellular energetics?
It acts as the energy currency, storing and providing energy for cellular processes.
What are the two main types of metabolism?
Anabolism (building molecules) and catabolism (breaking down molecules).
What are the three main stages of cellular respiration?
Glycolysis, citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation.
How many ATP molecules are produced during glycolysis?
Net gain of 2 ATP per glucose molecule.
Where does the electron transport chain occur?
In the inner mitochondrial membrane.
What creates the proton gradient in oxidative phosphorylation?
Electrons moving through the electron transport chain.
How many ATP molecules are produced by fermentation?
2 ATP per glucose molecule.
What does NADH do in cellular respiration?
Carries electrons to the electron transport chain for ATP production.
