Q

Key Findings (Anne Schotel)

A

LGBTQI+ have to navigate a whole host of realms - visibility/invisibility, intersectional identities

Focus on symbolic representation:

Identity formation = mediated by medical, legal, anti-gender…

political control = tensions between registration + state, access to healthcare

legitimacy = respectability politics and the perceptions of ‘ability to rule’

symbolic leads onto substantive + descriptive! creates ‘rules of the game’

Q

Amara Hammou: Findings

A

Viewed as problem-solving: getting solutions to the problems they experience

  • Pragmatic way of thinking: politicians have to solve
the problems because they have the money,
    decision-making power, elected/mandate
  • To solve problems, representatives need lived and
    field experience; is lacking; ‘incompetent’
    (knowledge issue)
  • Descriptive representation not possible
