L5 LGBTQI + Socio-Economic Flashcards
(3 cards)
Key Findings (Anne Schotel)
LGBTQI+ have to navigate a whole host of realms - visibility/invisibility, intersectional identities
Focus on symbolic representation:
Identity formation = mediated by medical, legal, anti-gender…
political control = tensions between registration + state, access to healthcare
legitimacy = respectability politics and the perceptions of ‘ability to rule’
symbolic leads onto substantive + descriptive! creates ‘rules of the game’
Amara Hammou: Research approach
Interviews with people in socio-economically difficult positions in Brussels on how they understand representation: bottom up approach
Amara Hammou: Findings
Viewed as problem-solving: getting solutions to the problems they experience
- Pragmatic way of thinking: politicians have to solve
the problems because they have the money,
decision-making power, elected/mandate - To solve problems, representatives need lived and
field experience; is lacking; ‘incompetent’
(knowledge issue) - Descriptive representation not possible
