Lab 15: Population Genetics Flashcards

1
Q

Describe how evolutionary changes occur in a population over time.

A

Evolutionary changes occur overtime due to random events, natural selection, migration, mutations, etc. These act as forces tht change a population over time.

Q

What are the conditions of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium?

A

-No mutations
-no migration or emigration
- no slective pressure for or against gentotype

Q

Calculate allele, genotype and phenotype frequencies using the Hardy-Weinberg equation

A

Allele frequency describes how frequent a particular allele appears in a population.
A=(total # of A alleles in a population)/(Number of copies A/a alleles in population)

Genotype Frequencies - the fraction of individuals with a given genotype.

Phenotype Frequencies - the fraction of individuals with a given phenotype.

Q

Describe the process of Natural Selection

A

Natural selection describes how organisms with heritble traits that help them survive and reproduce will pass that down to their offspring where they will be well adapted to their environement.
