Order for putting on protective gear
Wash hands Gown Face mask Eye protections Gloves Enter rooms
Signs of hypoxemia
Decrease arterial oxygen tension in blood
Signs: change in mental status, dyspnea, changes in hr,dysrthymnia, cyanosis, cool and clammy
COPD patients
Are CO2 retainers, so put them on low flow of oxygen
Oxymizer
Continuous flow of oxygen that are normally wasted during exhalation
Nasal cannula
Up to 6L
Oxymizer
Continuous flow of oxygen that is normally wasted during exhalation
Non-rebreather
Values close during expiration so that exhaled air does not enter reservoir to be re breathed
6-15L
Nebulizer
Changes meds from liquid to mist
Dirty because it’s humid and bacterial to grow
Different types of wound healing
Primary- closed by wound margins and placement of a great or flap
Secondary- wound left open and allow to close by epithelium and contraction
Tertiary- wound left open for a few days and then delayed primary closure
Wound healing phases
Inflammatory- (2-5), bleeding stops, scab, inflammation and cleansing wound
Proliferative- granulation, contraction, epithelialization
Maturation- collagen forms and increase tensile strength in the wounds, however it’s only 80% strong
Wound drainage
Serous- clear, yellow, and thin
Sanguineus- red with thin fresh blood
Purulent: creamy yellow, green, white, thick and opaque
IM injections
3mL syringe
21-23 G
1-1/2 needle
90 degree
Subcutaneous injection
45 or 90 degrees
Pinch the skin
1/2-1 inch needle
25G
Interdermal injections
15 degrees
1mL syringe
25-27 G
3/8-1/2 needle
0.01-0.1 mL
Staple removal and steri-strips
Staples: clean incision with normal saline first, remove alternative staples first
Ster-strips: apply directly, pull one side, and then stick,
Signs of hypoglycemia
Below 4
Severe is below 2.8
Fatigue, sleepiness, decrease bp, blurry vision, cranky!!
Fat and muscle is compensated due to low oxygen and glucose
Treatment is 15-20g glucose tablet. Give carbs and protein
Unconscious patient should be laid down and given D5oW
Insulin needle size
28.5-29 G
IV therapy values for different population
Adult: 3mL and larger muscle
Children, older adults, thin patients: 2mL
Deltoid, small infants: 1mL
Catheter occlusion
Inability to aspirate blood, flush or infuse
Sluggish flow
Check to be sure clamp and tubing is working
Air embolism
Light-headed, dyspnea, wheeze and cough.
Introduction of air into the IV system which then gets into the circulatory system
Place patient on left side head down
Sodium
Abundant in ECF osmotic concentration and water balance
48-144 mmol/L
Potassium
Intracellular compartment, regulates metabolic activities and cardiac functions
3.5-5 mmol
Calcium
Bone, teeth, blood clotting
2.25-2-74 mmol
