Lab 3 Flashcards

1
Q

Form Bahiagrass how can it be identified?

A
  1. Short, fleshy rhizomes (purple)
  2. Tissue above soil surface is primarily leaf blade (also flowering stems at times)

Q

When it comes to Management of Bahiagrass why is it important and what are its advantages?

A
  1. Importance is that it coveres 2.5 million acres in florida
  2. Advantages are:
    * Seed propogated
    * Tolerant of many kinds of soil drainage & fertility
    * Tolerant of heavy grazing in general (Tifton 9 & UF-riata are less tolerant than argetine & pensacola)
    * Does not need fertilization

Q

What are the key factors to identify Mulato?

A
  1. Very pubescent leaf blades & sheath
  2. Ligule is a fringe of hairs
  3. Upright bunch grasses
17
Q

When it comes to Mulato what is it used for?

A
  1. Currently used on a small scale, but is being evaluated exterior in research programs in FL.
  2. Cold tolerane for N. FL is limit survives for 2 years, longer jf winters are mid.
  3. Not adapted to very wet sites.
  4. Annual
  5. Very rapid growth, hard to manage
18
Q

When it comes to Sorghum how can one identify them?

A
  1. Annual
  2. Upright growth, bunch grass
  3. prominents mebraneous ligule glabrous (non hairy) sheath
  4. Panicole inflorescence
19
Q

What is the advantages and disadvantages for Sorghum?

A
  1. Hight yielding, excellent nutritive value, adaptable to wet lands than pearl mil
  2. Annual, very rapid growth, hard to manage, pressure acid toxicity folling stress
