Q

Base

A

base releases hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water.

a substance that can accept protons (H+) or donate electrons

Q

What colors does litmus change to for acid and base

A

Blue litmus paper turns red in an ACIDIC solution,

Red litmus paper turns blue in a BASIC (alkaline) solution

Q

Taste of Acid and Base
and Texture

A

Acids are sour and base is bitter in taste.

Acid is corrosive, and base is slippery to touch

Q

relationship between pH and hydrogen ion concentration

A

pH is a measure of the hydrogen ion concentration OR pH= -log[H+].

Q

Does the pH value increases or decreases when the concentration of hydrogen ion increases?

A

pH value decreases when the concentration of hydrogen ions [H +] increases

more hydrogen ions = lower pH = more acidic.

Q

What happens when you add a drop of acidic solution into water?

A

adding an acidic solution to water increases the concentration of hydrogen ions, making the solution more acidic and decreasing its pH

Q

what happens when you add a drop of acidic solution into buffer?

A

the pH of the buffer will decrease, but only slightly.

buffer resists change in pH, tries to maintain the pH of the solution

Q

What is a weak acid and weak base?

A

Weak Acid: An acid that only partially dissociates into ions when dissolved in water. This means that it doesn’t donate all of its hydrogen ions (H+) into the solution

Weak Base: When dissolved in water, does not completely ionize, meaning it doesn’t fully break down into hydroxide ions (OH-)
