Diaphragm
action = inhalation
sheet of muscle at bottom of thorax

Intercostal Muscles
action = inhalation and exhalation
between ribs
Rectus Abdominis
action = flex trunk
lateral to midline of abdomen
-“six-pack” (“abs”)
External Oblique
lateral portion of abdomen
-diagonal striations/fibers
Trapezius
action = elevate scapula (shrug shoulder)
upper-back muscle
-runs along vertebral column and inserts on scapula
Latissimus Dorsi
lower back muscle
-inserts on arm/humerous
-“swimmer’s muscle”
Serratus Anterior
“boxer’s muscle” looks like serrations points oriented anteriorly
Deltoid
action = abduct shoulder
triangular shoulder muscle
Pectoralis Major
action = adduct shoulder
chest muscle inserts on arm/humerus (“pecs”)
Triceps Brachii
action = extend elbow
posterior arm muscle (“triceps”)
Biceps Brachii
action = flex elbow
anterior arm muscle (“biceps”)
Gluteus Maximus
action = extend hip
butt/upper thigh muscle
-inserts on femur
Hamstrings Group

action = flex knee

Quadriceps Group

action = extend knee

Gastrocnemius
action = plantar flex ankle
calf muscle
Quadriceps Tendon
connects quadriceps to the superior edge of the patella
Patellar Ligament
strong flat ligament which connects from the superior edge of the patella to tibia (shin)
Calcaneal Tendon
“achilles tendon”
attach gastrocnemius and others to calcaneus
