Q

how do euglena eat?

A
  • they are mixtrophs
  • able to feed using both autotrophic and heterotrophic methods
  • possess chloroplasts and are capable of autotrophic nutrition
  • main source of nutrition is photosynthesis
  • also possess a gullet and can ingest food particles

Q

algae

A
  • large, multicellular organisms
  • brown, red and green algae
  • ARE photosynthetic but are NOT descended from a common ancestor and are found within two supergroups of the Eukarya

Q

why is algae three different colours?

A
  • aquatic organisms and all possess chlorophyll a (some also have b and or c)
  • water absorbs light, particularly the longer, red to yellow wavelengths, thus depriving chlorophyll a of much of the light energy it would normally absorb
  • algae compensates for this by possessing accessory photosynthetic pigments that absorb more of the light available underwater
  • accessory pigments give the seaweed different colours
  • red accessory pigment phycoerythrin is common in red algae while the golden accessory pigment fucoxanthin is common in browns
