What is the function of leaves?
produce sugar through photosynthesis
What is the function of stems?
- transport resources between leaves and roots
- provide structure and height
What is the function of roots?
- anchor the plant
- absorb water and minerals
Which type of vascular tissue transports materials up from the roots? What are those materials?
- xylem
- water and dissolved minerals
Which type of vascular tissue transports materials down from the leaves? What are those materials?
- phloem
- carbs, amino acids, and other organic materials
What is a cuticle?
a waxy layer on the epidermis of leaves to prevent water from escaping the leaf
What is the difference between monocots and eudicots (dicots) in terms of a number of cotyledons?
monocots (one cotyledon, parallel veins in leaves, flower parts in multiples of threes, stem vascular bundles scattered)
eudicots (two cotyledons, netlike veins in leaves, flower parts in fours or fives, stem vascular bundles in a ring)
