What sensory receptors belong to free nerve endings?
Hair root plexuses, Merkel cells, itch & tickle receptors.
What sensory receptors belong to encapsulated nerve endings?
Ruffini’s corpuscle, Pacinian corpuscles, corpuscles of touch.
What receives input from third-order neurons: where sensory information is consciously perceived?
Cerebral cortex
What cell body is located in spinal cord of the brain-stem?
Second-order neurons
What is the gateway to cerebral cortex; location of synapse between second-order and third-order neurons.
Thalamus
What is the neuron associated with sensory receptors?
First-order neuron
What relays sensory nerve impulses from thalamus to cerebral cortex?
Third-order neuron
What is the cell body for first-order neuron located here?
Posterior dorsal root ganglion
What is deferred pain?
Pain sensation originating in a visceral organ and perceived in a specific region of the body surface that is innervated by spinal segments.
When you hit your funny bone (olecranon) where would you experience pain?
Digits 4-5 & Ulnar.
Why would pain persist even after the stimulation is removed?
Can cause diffuse stimulation of visceral nociceptors that can be felt as slow pain.
What is the nerve carrying the axon of the first-order neuron and the levels where the first-order neuron enters the spinal cord?
Femoral nerve L2-L4
Do the cerebellar hemispheres receive proprioceptive nerve impulses ipsilaterally or contralaterally?
Ipsilaterally
Is proprioception consciously perceived by the cerebellum?
No.
What is the accessory eye structure that drains tears into the nasal cavity?
Nasolacrimal duct
What produces tears?
Lacrimal apparatus
What is the membrane that covers the inner surface of eyelid?
Palpebral-conjunctiva
Where do tears from surface of eye drain into?
Lacrimal canals
What is the membrane that covers the anterior surface of the sclera?
Bulbar conjunctiva
What drains tears into the nasolacrimal duct?
Lacrimal sac
What produces aqueous humor?
Ciliary process
What are the structures that are part of the vascular tunic?
Iris, ciliary body, choroid
What is the structure that contains photoreceptors?
Retina
What controls the size of the pupil?
Iris
