Lab Tests Flashcards
(21 cards)
ALB
Albumin-
Serum protein that helps evaluate hydration, hemorrhage, and intestinal, liver, and kidney disease
ALKP
Alkaline Phosphatase-
Elevations may indicate liver damage, Cushing’s disease, or active bone growth in a young dog
ALT
Alanine Aminotransferase-
Can determine active liver damage, but doesn’t indicate the cause
AMLY
Amylase-
Elevations indicate pancreatitis or kidney disease
AST
Aspartate aminotransferase-
Increases may indicate liver, heart, or skeletal muscle damage
BUN
Blood urea nitrogen-
Determines kidney function, increased levels (azotemia) can be caused by dehydration, shock, urethral obstruction, or kidney, liver, and heart disease
Ca
Calcium-
Can indicate variety of diseases including kidney disease. Tumors, hyperparathyroidism, and low albumin can also alter serum calcium
CHOL
Cholesterol-
Tests for hypothyroidism, liver disease, Cushing’s disease, and diabetes mellitus
Cl
Chloride-
An electrolyte that is typically lost with symptoms like vomiting or illnesses such as Addison’s disease. Elevations often indicate dehyration
CORT
Cortisol-
A hormone measured in tests for Cushing’s disease (the low dose dexamethasone suppression test) and Addison’s disease (ACTH stimulation test)
CREA
Creatinine-
Reveals kidney function and helps distinguish between kidney and non- kidney causes of elevated BUN
GGT
Gamma glutamy transferase- enzyme that indicates liver disease or corticosteroid excess
GLOB
Globulin - Blood protein that often increases with chronic inflammation and certain disease states
Flu
Glucose- Blood sugar, elevated levels may indicate diabetes mellitus and low levels can cause collapse, seizures, or coma
K
Potassium- electrolyte typically lost with symptoms such as vomitting, diarrhea, or excessive urination. Increased levels may indicate kidney failure, Addison’s disease, dehydration, or urethral obstruction. High levels can lead to cardiac arrest
LIP
Lipase- enzyme that may indicate pancreatitis
Na
Sodium- electrolyte often loss with signs of vomiting, diarrhea, kidney disease, and Addison’s disease; indicates hydration status
PHOS
Phosphorus- elevations are often associated with kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, and bleeding disorders
TBIL
Total bilirubin- elevations may indicate liver or hemolytic disease; helps identify bile duct problems and certain types of anemia
T4
Thyroxine- thyroid hormone, decreased levels often signal hypothyroidism in dogs
Total protein
Indicates hydration status and provides information about liver, kidneys, and infectious diseases
