Ladder Ops Book 2 - Aerial Ladders Flashcards
(46 cards)
Placement of aerial is dependent on 4 things?
-Whether immediate rescue is apparent.
-Where no immediate rescue effort is required, the size of the frontage of the building to be covered in case of future need.
-Smoke, heat or fire causing an exposure that would endanger a victim, a member or the ladder.
-Area or street conditions that might hamper optimum positioning.
Who will help LCC in placement of apparatus?
OV (can also be officer at severe fire)
OV does so before carrying out duties. Apparatus SHALL NOT back up unless LCC has the assistance of one guide person.
Aerial ladder proper placement from building is?
25-35’ from building in center of street. This is to ensure a good climbing angle.
Average curb is ____ ?
Average street is ___?
13’
35’
“Average city sidewalk is 13’ from the building line to the curb and 35’ from curb to curb.”
Place center of _______ the same distance and direction from the sidewalk line as the window.
Turntable (use sidewalk markings to help)
Put this in the proper order:
Rotate
Raise
Extend
Raise
Rotate
Extend
Two methods that may be used to attain accuracy in lining up the ladder with a window are:
(Experienced vs. Inexperienced)
Experienced member - sighting along the ladder rail of the TOP SECTION.
Less experienced member - sighting along the UNDERSIDE OF THE LADDER BEAM on the top sliding section.
Recommended distance of the tip from the objective is _______.
In case of rescue?
Extreme angle?
At a window?
2” to 6”.
In case of rescue - 2”.
At extreme angle - “ladder barely touching building.”
At a window - “less than 6” over the sill.”
When placing aerial at window sill tip should be?
Less than 6” over sill.
When only 1 aerial and 2 rescues are needed at 2 different places, position the turntable where?
turntable MIDWAY between locations.
When placing ladder alongside the fire escape the ladder should be ____ away from face of building and about _______ above balcony railing.
2” away from building
One to 3 feet above the balcony railing.
How many feet would be considered a narrow frontage building?
30 feet or less in width.
(Center turntable to center of building)
Ladder companies shall make every effort to maintain access to nearby hydrants to allow for?
In line pumping
Large frontage building is considered, how many feet?
Where to place apparatus?
Over 30’
No condition exists - place center of turntable 15 feet from the side wall passed on your approach.
If smoke/fire showing - position for maximum coverage.
Extensive floor coverage if 2nd ladder comes from the opposite direction 1st ladder position 1st ladder where?
at the near end of the building.
When venting windows with aerial aim at - ?
Aim at upper window panels, just above the sash, and extend without hitting the sides or tops of window frames. Only SLIGHT extension is required.
Then lower to crack horizontal sash. However, at extreme angles, just lower the ladder so the INSIDE beam breaks the window.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES shall vent be made extorting lateral pressure.
Who sets chocks and stabilizers?
What is the alternative method when staffing is available?
OV.
When staffing is available a different member sets INBOARD stabilizer and OV sets OUTBOARD side because this will let him observe the building.
Who climbs ladder 1st and followed by Who?
OV then LCC.
True or False
You can move the ladder with a member on it?
True
Only in an extreme emergency such as SERIOUS EXPOSURE TO FLAME OR HIGH HEAT.
However, climbing while it is being extended or retracted is PROHIBITED.
At steeper angles have the victim grasp the _____. What should you do when helping them climb down?
Rungs
Talk to your victim - reassure them, praise their actions. Tell them to look straight ahead or up, not to look down. If they panic, take control. Press them agains the ladder with your body. Be firm.
When is removal of the victim considered complete?
When the victim is all the way on the ground
not the turntable.
If required, render first aid until relieved. Assist them to an ambulance if necessary.
**These actions shall NOT be taken if you are needed to assist in additional rescue operations.
How do you determine who to remove first?
Fire in the front - more difficult first. LCC helps them down out of danger then OV helps the next more capable person.
Fire in the rear - easy person first, then harder person.
FIRE IN FRONT FAT GUY FIRST. Opposite in rear.
There are three situations with vacant building fires where the officer gives precedence to the positioning of their aerial apparatus:
-Not completely vacant
-The officer receives information or has prior knowledge that part of this building is used by vagrants or squatters.
-The reach of the 100’ aerial is required
In all of the above situations, the officer selects a position that permits achieving the intended objective while allowing for the placement and use of a tower ladder.
The preferential order for removal of people is via:
I HAVE FIVE LITTLE RATS
Interior stairs
Horizontal exits
Fire escapes
Ladders
Rope
