90% of all companies in Nigeria chose to locate their HQ in Lagos.
What is one international significance of Lagos?
Lagos is one of Africa’s economic hubs, its GDP alone is larger than that of West African neighbours Niger,
Benin, Togo, Chad, Sierra Leone, Liberia and the Gambia put together. This makes it a big attraction to
foreign workers.
How much has migration impacted Lagos’s growth?
Migration accounted for 61% of Lagos’ growth, with 83% of that being internal migration
Who do people from rural areas move to Lagos?
more job opportunities and higher paying jobs.

What are some positive aspects of Lagos that are happening due to the rapid expansion?
With art/culture we now see the new Lagos Museum open, five new theatres being built and the regeneration
of the Onikan area as a cultural hub.
Housing conditions for some have significantly improved, many benefit from new housing, shopping malls and leisure
facilities but this is not the majority of the population.
What are some negative aspects of Lagos that are happening due to the rapid expansion? (traffic)
TRAFFIC - It takes some people three hours to get home from work on average. An important reason
is the sad condition of roads. Most were constructed in the 1970s and were supposed to
serve a population that was still much smaller. The population doubled between
2000-2022 and the government did not invest sufficiently in roads and public transport.
What are some negative aspects of Lagos that are happening due to the rapid expansion? (rail network per capita)
Lagos has one of the lowest levels of rail/metro network per capita of any major megacity.
Only 1.3km per million people!
How is Lagos facing its problems?
the bus rapid transit system was successful and the project
became profitable within 18months which showed how successful bus transport can be.
Stage two of the project involved money from the French government and UN who donated over
$300m, this provided a 13km extension to the designated bus routes, widening of roads, bus
terminal, pedestrian pathways and 300 more buses.
How has the BRT been successful?
Journey times have reduced from 45 to 30 minutes for over 200,000 daily commuters (but keep
in context of the metropole area being 23million)
The number of people who can access Lagos’ largest market area within 45 minutes has grown
by 65%.
