Alliteration
The repetition of an initial consonant within a phrase or a sentence
e.g. little lame cat, rather round
Assonance
The repetition of a vowel sound within a phrase or sentence
e.g. nExt bEst bEd, hERbERt glERbERt
Onomatopoeia
Words that sound like the things they are describing when spoken aloud
e.g. snap, crackle, pop, rumble
Antithesis
When a word, phrase or idea is set in opposition to another resulting into a strong contrast or ambiguity which can often surprise or shock
e.g. I won’t HURT you, my FRIEND
Are you NOISY with QUIET times
Or are you QUIET with NOISY times?
Simile
When one thing is likened to another, recognized by use of ‘like’ or ‘as’
e.g. body beats wild LIKE a feathered heart
Personification
When an inanimate object is given human characteristics e.g. soaring fire sways and sings
Metaphor
Turns one thing into another: a direct comparison of two objects e.g. in my frail canoe, I struggle to cross the sea of desire
