Land use/Land use conflicts in rivers Flashcards

Flashcards for revising land use and conflicts within rivers (6 cards)

Q

What is the land use conflict between farmers&tourists???

A

Tourists park their cars on narrow roads and grassy verges which can stop the farmer from accessing fields in large machinery like tractors.

High tourist traffic can lead to congestion on rural roads, hindering the transport of goods and machinery.

When tourists walk across farmland they sometimes leave gates open and livestock can escape.

Tourists leave litter on farmland which livestock can eat, resulting in expensive vets bills for the farmers.

Tourists may let their dogs off the leading to them chasing farm animals and causing them distress.

Wild campers may camp on or near farm land. This can cause nearby animals to become distressed. In lambing season this could result in sheep having miscarriages.

Tourists play on farm equipment and could potentially damage it, resulting in expensive repair bills for the farmer.

Footpath erosion on popular walking routes can damage the soil making it difficult to grow crops on.

Q

What are the solutions to land use conflicts between farmers&tourists???

A

Clear signage indicating private farmland property, areas of access, and rules for behaviour on farmlands to prevent trespassing or disturbances.

Out of town car parks for tourists to park in. For example, at Luss near Loch Lomond.

Farmers can install ‘kissing gates’ which force tourists to close them.

Farmers can install step-stool fences instead of gates.

Farmers can install cattle grids as this will stop livestock escaping from fields.

Tourists can be educated in the countryside code. This will encourage them to take litter home to dispose of it and keep dogs on leads.

The local Council may install waste disposal facilities in tourist hotspots to reduce littering.

Camping Management zones are enforced by National Park Rangers and the National Park Police Officer at Loch Lomond. This means wild camping does not occur during lambing season.

Popular walking routes can have gravel laid to protect the top soil.

Q

What are the land use conflicts between tourists and commercial forestry???

A

Areas of commercial forestry might be off-limits to tourists, leading to frustration and limited exploration opportunities.

Large-scale logging can alter the natural beauty of a landscape, which can deter tourists seeking scenic forest views.

The machinery used in logging can be loud, disrupting the peace and tranquillity tourists might be seeking.

Tourists, especially those focused on eco-tourism, might oppose logging due to perceived environmental damage, including habitat destruction.

Deforestation may harm bird habitats, to the annoyance of bird watchers.

Logging trucks travel slowly on the narrow roads and this can cause tailbacks and congestion.

Q

what are the solutions to the conflict land use of tourism&commercial forestry???

A

Logging takes place on a smaller scale to reduce visual pollution/scars on the landscape.

Tree stumps are left behind so trees grow back.

Schedule logging activities during times when tourist traffic is minimal.

Education campaigns can promote understanding among tourists about sustainable forestry practices and the economic importance of logging.

Q

What are the land use conflicts between tourism&renewable energy???

A

Some renewable energy structures (Hydro Electric Power Stations, wind turbines) are seen as an eye sore or a blot of the landscape

The construction of renewable energy structures creates noise pollution for tourists seeking rest and relaxation.

Reservoirs and dam infrastructure can limit access to previously popular tourist spots like rivers, lakes, or waterfalls.

Dams can impact local flora and fauna, which might be a significant concern for eco-tourists.

Q

What are the solutions to land use conflicts between tourism&renewable energy???

A

HEP stations can be screened with greenery to hide industrial buildings and machinery.

HEP stations are built with local rocks and slate to fit in with the area.

Wind turbines and HEP stations can be constructed in low season when there are less tourists.

Some dams can be turned into tourist attractions themselves, offering tours, recreational opportunities, and observation decks.

Design hydro projects keeping ecological sustainability in mind, ensuring minimal disruption to local fauna and flora.
