landforms associated with plate movement Flashcards

1
Q

types of plate boundary

A

constructive - plates move apart

Q

ocean ridges

A

formed at constructive plate boundaries
space between plates is filled wit basaltic lava, forms ridge
forms submarine volcanoes (plumes of magma erupt)
e.g. mid-atlantic ridge

Q

rift valleys

A

formed at constructive plate boundaries
valleys form when plates move apart in continental areas, areas of crust sink between parallel faults to form a valley
e.g. East African Rift Valley

Q

deep sea trenches

A

formed at destructive plate boundaries where crust is lost
oceanic and continental move towards each other
e.g. marianas trench
formation of island arcs:
- oceanic crust melts again at Benioff zone, melted crust has lower density and so rises and solidifies to form new land

Q

fold mountains

A

formed at destructive plate margins where continental and continental crust meet
when meet forms fold mountains
e.g. Himalayas (Indian and eurasian plate)
