Back-Channeling
When a speaker gives short interruptions to give support in speech. E.g: I see, yeah, oh, okay
Contraction
A reduction often marked with an apostrophe. E.g: Can’t or don’t
Deixis/Deictics
Words such as there, here, that, there which refer backwards or forwards in text
Discourse Marker
Words or phrases which are used to signal the relationship between utterances. Like a sign post that the reader should follow. Eg: Firstly
Ellison
The omission or slurring of one or more sounds. Eg: gonna instead of going to
False Start
This is when a speaker begins an utterance the stops and either repeats or reformulates
Paralinguistic
Related to body language and facial expressions. Going beyond spoken language
Prosodic Features
Includes features such as stress, rhythm, pitch, tempo and intonation
Transactional Talk
Language to get things done or to transmit content

Mentioning something that isn’t in the text it’s self: ‘look at that’
Intertextuality
Using text from one field to another for example selling products with scientific evidence

The use of linguistic analysis to explore and challenge idiologies
