Laptop Hardware 1.1 Flashcards
(22 cards)
Why is it challenging to repair latops?
It is engineered to a precise specifications; some laptops are easier to troubleshoot as it is easier to access and replace the hardware.
List All Laptop Hardware.
Batteries, Monitor, Keyboard/Keys, Memory,
Laptop batteries Takedown.
Some Laptops are very modular while some are not. With modular batteries, you can expect a a button that can pop-out and then you can replace the battery there. But with non-modular batteries, you might need a technician to do a full laptop takedown to replace the battery.
Two common Laptop Batteries
Lithium-Ion [Li-ion], Lithium-Ion polymer [LiPo]
What is the most used/ most swapped out component of the laptop?
Keyboard
Keyboard Replacement/Takedown.
Usually very easy to replace. Usually you can remove a few beze/ or a few screws and the keyboard will pop-out as a single unit. Usually connect to the system board/mother board with a single ribbon cable. May or may not be this easy.
How to troubleshoot a laptop that is having keyboard problems?
Connect an external keyboard to troubleshoot so that you can get around the problem caused by the laptop’s keyboard. It could also help indicate whether the problem is with the physical keyboard itself or in the operating system.
Windows/Function Keys.
Can be used at the same time as other keys for secondary functions.
Laptop keys.
Very Fragile, Follow the manual from manufacturer when replacing.
Laptop Memory.
Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module [SO-DIMM] ; some are soldered to the motherboard which would require a full system board replacement or you can just change it easily like a PC . Some has a Window that you can open up to access the memory.
Types of Laptop Storage
Magnetic Disk [Traditional spinning drive] , Solid-state drive [SSD], SSD M.2
Magnetic Disk
Old traditional storage
- has a moving disk 2.5 inch
SSD and SSDM.2
SSD
- 2.5 inch, same as magnetic disk
SSD
- smaller and just like a SO-DIMM
Replacing Laptop Storage
All internal
- either open a cover or open the entire back of the laptop
M.2
- similar to RAM installation
Changing Storages
move user documents between drives, install any required apps and the OS is time consuming, use imaging/cloning software.
Image/Cloning
Sometimes included in the SSD
-sometimes you have to create an image file of th system which you will store in a storage which you can install that image to a new drive or a partition
-drive to drive image
image from one drive to another in real time
802.11
- Local Area Network (LAN) - allows you to connect to WIFI
- Often integrated into the motherboard but old laptops have a seperate hardware like SO-DIMM but has small connectors that plug in with the antennas in the laptops.
Bluetooth
-Personal Area Network (PAN)
Wi-Fi Antennas
multiple antennas [WIFI main and aux, sometimes a Bluetooth antenna.]
Wraps around the monitor/screen so that the antennas can reach the highest it can
Biometrics
-fingerprint, face recognition [can be used together with different security systems]
NFC
Near-Field Communication
- short distance networking [can be used for authentication without password like a card, eg. paying with your phone using NFC]
Camera/Webcam
built in camera and microphone
