IMMEDIATELY!
Counsel patient on small risk of infection, expulsion and perforation (rare).
Contraindications to placing an IUC include
Misshapen uterus/abnormal anatomy
Active GC/CT or PID infection
Warning symptoms for IUCs.
Bleeding, pain, infection, clot s/sx.
- MISPLACEMENT-Shortening, lengthening, or disappearance of the IUC strings -or Feeling the hard plastic bottom of the “T” part of the IUC against the cervix
- Suspicion of pregnancy
- Vaginal bleeding that is heavier than usual
- Severe abdominal cramping, pain, or tenderness in the abdomen
- Ongoing pain or bleeding during sex
- Unexplained fever above 100.4 and/or chills
How long must you use back-up for after IUC or implant placement?
“7 days” unless within first 5 days of menses.
but Cu-IUD & Mirena/Liletta also works as EC…so likely just for Skyla and Kyleena
