Streptococcus equi
- horses
- causes strangles, genital infection and mastitis
- 24-48 hrs after fever sets: nasal discharge, depression, & submandibular lymphadenopathy
Streptococcus suis
- swine
- causes abortion, septicemia, meningitis
- fever, bacteremia/septicemia, inappetence, shifting lameness
Clostridium chauvoei
- sheep and cattle
- causes BlackLeg
- sudden onset, death without premonitory signs
- acute lameness, swelling at hip, shoulder, chest, back starts small and then increases rapidly cutting off blood supply
- death occurs within 12-48 hrs
Clostridium tetani
- horses, cattle, pigs, and carnivores
- an anaerobic bacteria that causes tetanus
Bacillus anthracis
- ruminants, dogs, cats, horses
- this disease in horses can be acute, death within 2-3 days
- resp. or cardiac distress, convulsions, bloody diarrhea, swelling of genitalia
Klebsiella pneumoniae
- cattle, horse, sheep, dogs and birds
- causes mastitis, neonatal septicemia, metritis
Klebiella oxytoca
- affects horses
- causes vaginitis, metritis, abortion and infertility
Listeria monocytogenes
- disease of the CNS
- causes abortion, mastitis, septicemia
- can be found in raw milk and uncooked meat
Salmonella serovar typhimurium
- disease precipitated by stressful conditions
- salmonellosis is common in hospitalized horses that have been subjected to prolonged surgical procedures
Pseudomonas spp.
- P.aeruginosa - causes otitis externa & fleece rot
- P. fluorescens & aeruginosa cause mastitis
Leptospira spp.
- L. pomona - causes abortion in horse, cattle, pigs
- L. kennewicki - mainly horses, causing abortion
Yersinia spp.
- Y. pseudotuberculosis - affects rodents, cats, cattle, and goats causing abortion and pseudotuberculosis
- Y. enterocolitica - affects rabbits, dogs, pigs, and horses causing ileitis & gastroenteritis
Brucella spp.
- B. abortus - causes abortion, chronic bursitis, fistulous withers
- B. melitensis - sheeps & goats, causes lameness, mastitis and abortion
Proteus vulgaris
- dogs, horses, and calves
- causes cystitis, upper urinary tract infection, prostatitis, otitis externa
Staphylococcus spp.
- S. aureus - mastitis, skin infection, vaginitis
- S. epidermidis - affects cattle, causes mastitis & skin abscesses
- S. intermedius - affects dogs and cattle, causes skin and ear infection, mastitis
