The Cricoid
What cartilage of the pharynx is paired?
Artyneoid
What makes up the pharyngeal inlet?
The epiglottis, corniculate cartilage, arytenoid cartilage and the aryepiglotic fold
What supplies the intrinsic muscles of the larynx?
The recurrent laryngeal nerve and superior laryngeal nerve (cricothyroid muscle)
What supplies the mucous membrane of the larynx?
the superior laryngeal nerve
the laryngopharynx lies where in relation to the pharynx?
posterior
What prevents the bolus from entering the larynx?
The epiglottis
What is the outer circular layer of the pharynx made up of?
The superior, middle and inferior constrictor muscles
Name the three muscles of the inner longitudinal layer of the pharynx?
the stylopharyngeus, the salpingopharungeus and the palatopharyngeus
What innervates the pharynx?
The pharyngeal plexus (CNX + CNXI)
What is the role of the constrictor muscles?
TO propel the bolus towards the oesophagus
What is the role of the longitudinal layer of muscles during swallowing?
To shorten, widen pharynx and to elevate the larynx
What are the vestibular folds also known as?
The false vocal cords
Are the vestibular folds superior or inferior to the true vocal cords?
Superior
What occurs in recurrent laryngeal nerve resection?q
Difficulty swallowing
When are vocal cords adducted?
During speaking or singing
When are vocal cords partially abducted?
During normal respirtation
When are vocal cords fully abducted
During rapid breathing
What bone makes up the roof of the nasopharynx?
Sphenoid
Name the three layers of the pharynx?
Outer muscular layer
Inner muscular layer
Middle fibrous layer
Inner mucous membrane
What provides sensory innervation to the pharynx?
The glossopharyngeal (CNIX)
What provides motor innervation to the pharynx?
The vagus (CNX)
