introduction - what is law

A

distinction between law and morality must be made : law = define by Lord John Salmond as “ a body of principles recognised and applied by the site in the administration of justice” —> legal rules are compulsory that are written down in an organised way with start date and can be forcefully applied with use of penalties = apply to all members of society

defined b Phillip Harris as ‘ set beliefs, principles and standards of behaviours’

they are optional and vary within different cultures and religions —> not written down + develop over time and are informed informally through family

its said to specify what ought to be done and outlines accountable and unacceptable behaviours in comparison to law which states that citizens cannot do—> with formal sanctions for those that follow
