Whiteley v Chappell (statutory interpretation)
Charged with a section which made the offence to impersonate ‘any person entitled to vote’. Pretended to be a voter but someone who died. The court held the defendant was not liable due to the literal rule
Berriman case (literal rule)
he wasn’t ‘repairing or relaying’ so couldn’t claim compensation as took it as the literal rule.
Re sigsworth (golden rule)
son had murdered his mother. The mother had not bad a will so would normally go to the next kin according to rules. Didn’t want him to benefit from the crime. Golden rule prevented the situation.
