Law of Inertia Flashcards
(15 cards)
Are forces of two objects having physical contact with each
other. The two objects will be pulling or pushing each other.
Contact Forces
Is the force that is transmitted through a string, rope, cable, or wire when it is pulled tight by forces acting from opposite ends.
Tension Force (T)
Is a special type of frictional force that acts upon objects as they travel through the air.
Air Resistance
Is a support force exerted upon an object that is in contact with another stable object.
Normal Force (N)
Is the force exerted by a surface as an object moves across it or makes an effort to move it across it
Friction (Ff)
Is a force that is applied to an object by a person or another object.
Applied Force (Fa)
The objects are subjected to a force but do not need to be in contact with each other.
Non-contact forces
Also is known as Weight (W) the force with which the Earth,
moon or other massively large object attracts another towards itself.
Gravity Force
“An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same velocity unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.”
Newton’s First Law of Motion/Law of Inertia
It is the tendency of an object to resist changes in its motion.
Inertia
The heavier the mass, the
________ is the inertia.
Greater
Is a frame of reference with constant velocity. It is also a non-accelerating frame of reference in which the law of inertia holds.
Inertial Frame of Reference
Are diagrams used to show the relative magnitude and direction of all forces acting upon an object in a given situation. The direction of the
arrow shows the direction of the force and the size of the arrow shows the magnitude of the force.
Free Body Diagrams
The sum of all forces acting on an object.
Fnet
Fnet = 0
