LD - Lecture 2 Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is seafloor morphology?
Study of the formation, alteration and configuration of seabed features and relationship with underlying ecology
Enodgenic forces (internal) (3)
Earths core, mantle convection, plate tectonics
Exogenic forces (External) (4)
Weathering, Oceans (waves, tides, currents), Ice (glaciers and sea ice), Sunlight
Continental Margins
Interface between continental and oceanic crust
How much of the ocean and earths surface do continental margins cover?
28% of oceans, 11% of earths surface
Where are active margins found?
Convergent plate boundaries
Where are passive Margins found?
Tectonic plate boundary
What are active margions caused by?
Plate Tectonics
What are passive margins caused by?
Exogenic forces
What is Progradation?
Glacier movement which pushes sediment which extends the continental shelf.
Where do deep sea fans form?
Bottom of continental slope of passive margins
Features of deep sea fans?
large scale deposition, graded sediment sizes
Features of active margins? (2)
Steep slope. accretionary wedge
What is an accretionary wedge?
Wedge shape found at convergent boundaries made up of mixed sediment.
How are guyots formed?
Fla top sea mounts created by wave action shaving off top.
