When to use passe compose?
is used for specific completed actions in the past
ex: J’ai mange (I ate)
When to use Imparfait?
used for ongoing or habitual actions and background descriptions
ex: Elle lisait un livre (she was reading a book)
Conjugating with Avoir:
Je ai
Tu as
Il a
Nous avons
Vous avez
Ils/elles ent
Conjugating with Etre
Je suis
tu es
il est
nous sommes

When to use avoir?
You sometimes do avoir, if there is a direct object (what the action is done to)
For instance: the cat ate the mouse
the mouse would be the direct object because the verb ate is an action, that is being done to the mouse. So in French you would use avoir in this case…
When to use etre?
Verbs of movement or change of state
