Ability to interview and interrogate
What factor most likely results in an officer’s successful assignment to internal affairs?
The officer’s interest in the assignment
The same remains true for any special assignment. This trumps skills and other factors which can be taught.
What is the procedure for a felony car stop?
- One at a time order all occupants to exit the vehicle
- Instruct individuals to walk backwards to you with hands clasped behind their head
- Instruct individuals to kneel to the ground or if necessary lay on the ground with limbs spread and palms up
What does post mortem lividity indicate?
- Refers to the pooling of blood in a deceased individual
- Gravity takes over and blood pools downward
- Important considerations include victims found in positions that are not suported by the lividity. This can indicate the body was moved
Ex. Victim found face down with lividity to the back area
What should be done in cases involving college campuses and drug activity complaints?
- Interview campus administrators regarding drug activity
- Types of drugs, suspect descriptions, and times of day are important factors prior to conducting surveillance.
What are the steps for plaster casting?
- Photograph- one with measure one without
- Record conditions
- Sketch and record any trademarks
- Remove objects obviously added after impression was made
- Remove liquids via eyedropper
- Build 2 in retaining wall (in cases of tire tracks cast entire circumference of tire, typically 9 feet, done by making several approx 1x1.5 ft adjacent casts
- Mix materials
- Pour into area utilizing a deflector not directly into area
- Reinforce plaster with twigs in first layer
- Cure 20-30 mins
- When at least 4 footprints are found sketch measuring length of steps and measure foot angles with lines through
In instances where you are unsure, when seen on supervisor exams typically all answers are correct
Still check for obvious errors
How can information can be obtained regarding a shotgun found at a crime scene?
Information can be obtained from:
* Pellets
* Wadding (plastic cup within the shell that holds the pellets)
What are some features of acceptable crime scene photographs?
- Free from distortion
- Present things that are material
*Not taken in a manner that inherently illicits sympathy
What can crime scene sketches be used for?
- To show measurements
- Positions of objects
- Movements
Should include some identifying features including:
Face of the sketch:
* Arrow indicating North and a capital N at arrow point
* Scale used in making sketch
On back side:
* Address or description of scene
* Case number
* Date and time measurements taken
* Names of recording persons and sketch persons name
