Leadership
Act of guiding/influencing people to achieve desired outcomes
(Influence beliefs, opinions or behaviors of an individual or group)
Management
Coordination of resources (time, people, supplies) to achieve outcomes. Requires problem solving and decision-making process
Connection power
Persons relationship with other people who are perceived as being powerful
Reverent power
Followers identification with the leader. (Admired and respected nurse leader able to influence other nurses because if their desire to be like the manager)
Coercive power
Based on fear of punishment for failure to comply with stated rules
Legitimate power
Ones official position in the organization.
Information power
An individual possession of a type of knowledge that is needed by others
Informal power
Result of personal relationships, being in the right place at the right time, unique characteristics such as attractiveness, education, experience, drive or decisiveness

Ability to compensate others for complying with various organizational rules and goals

Based on knowledge, skills and information.

Technical skills: clinical expertise and nursing knowledge
Human skills: ability and good judgement to work with people as an effective leader promoting productivity
Conceptual skills: ability to understand the complexities of an organization and to recognize how and where ones management area fits into the overall structure

Organizations statement describes its purpose and the reason why it exists. Philosophy describes its values and beliefs. All planning by the nurse manager should reflect and exemplify this stated mission and philosophy.
