Special needs
Percentage of dentists that provide “special care.”
10% or less
Sees a disability as a feature of the person and calls for intervention to correct it.
Medical Model of diasbility
Sees a disability as a problem created by an unaccomodating physical environment brought about by inappropriate societal attitudes.
Social Model of disability
Integrates portions of the other models and sees a disability as the outcome of an interaction between a physical condition and contextual factors.
Biopsychosocial model
Estimated number of people worldwide with moderate to severe disabilities.

Dental care
This population has poorer oral hygiene and higher prevalence and severity of periodontal disease.

1) Changing societal attitudes
2) Deinstitutionalization
3) Increasing life expetancy
Says that a person’s name or pronoun should be mentioned before the disability or impairment, and the disability is identified but does NOT modify the person.
People-first language.
Ex: He has autism … rather than … He is autistic.
Where did most people with developmental disabilities and mental illness live up until the mid-20th century?
At home
Residential facilities were developed for people with developmental disabilities around when?

Where do most people with intellectual disabilities live NOW?
In the community
The following has caused what?
1) Post-WWII societal attitudes, especially reduced stigmatization of mental illness.
2) More effective out-patient care, including medications.
3) Changes in insurance allowances driving tx to outpatient settings.
Institutions housing the mentally ill to close.
A significant number of these are homeless or in jail.
MENTAL ILLNESS
This group has a dramatic increase in life expectancy AND high prevalence of chronic co-morbidities.
Special needs
People with disabilities have a higher prevalence of these diseases.
- CV diseases
- Diabetes
- Oral health problems
- Seizure disorders
- Psychiatric involvement.
