Lec 12 - Latent and Persistent virus Flashcards

1
Q

diff between latent and persistent virus

A

latent virus = maintained in inactive state in the cell, undetectable unless disease is reactivated

persistant virus = long term infections with constant low levels of virus production

all latent viruses are persistant viruses

Q

what type of cells are typically infected by persistant viruses

A

cells of the immune system (means it can destroy it alongside also)
or
neurones

Q

what type of cells, that flag the virus to immune system, can be destroyed by persistant viruses

A

cytotoxic t lymphocytes (CTL)
prevents hosts t cells from detecting viral infected cells

7
Q

diff in sindbis virus injection into adult mice vs neonates

A

in adult = causes non cytopathic persistant infection as expected

in neonates = death
- lack proteins that prevent apoptosis

Q

how can cytomegalovirus affect pregnant women

A

the virus can cross placental barrier and infect the fetus
= developmental issues - vary depedning on which gestational period the mum gets infected

Q

which 2 proteins from cytomegalovirus cause MHC Class I to be injected from ER to cytoplasm

A

US2
US11
they displace the heavy chain as its on the way to the membrane

16
Q

what oter cell types can Nef kill

A

UNINFECTED activated T cells
via the CXCR4 receptor
triggers apoptosis

17
Q

what is the host interferon repsonse

A

timulates adaptive immune response

18
Q

how does bovine diarrhoea virus affect cattle

A
  • usually a transient infection
  • but if preggers, and if non cytopathic version = presistent infection of unborn child
= as it blocks itnerferon response
    = no adaptive immune response
19
Q

how does hep C virus stay persistent

A

antigenic variation
- amino acid altered in immunodominant peptides
= cell invisible to cytotoxic t cells

20
Q

what might happen after several years of persistant hep C infection

A

liver damage
hepatocellular carcinoma
