Lec 3: PA & Sedentary Behaviour Questionnaires Flashcards

1
Q

GUIDE for selecting PA Questionnaire

1-9

A

1 PURPOSE - clearly defined
2 CONSTRUCT - matches your construct (beh. etc) with measurement
(overall vs spec setting vs spec dimension (type of PA))

3 MEASUREMENT UNIT - depends on research Q
(ex: light, mod, vig PA/ METs)

4 RECALL PERIOD - day/wk/month/year
(during typical week = habitual PA - may assess more current PA)

5 SETTING - context (leisure time, transport, household)
6 STUDY POP - validity/reliability - important to be reported for spec pop
(age, sex, gender, culture) Ex Elderly = pop, then use measure for elderly ppl

7 MEASUREMENT QUALITY - validity (content, face…
- Reliability (test-retest - relevant)
- (Internal Reliability - are answers similar - less relevant to get PA beh)
: PA measure tends to be a combined measure
- All PA is different/not homogeneous (play bball not soccer)

8 FEASIBILITY/EASE OF USE
- phone, online, clear instruction, no burden, easy to interpret

9 RESOURCES
- of researcher & participant (time, money)

Q
PA Questionnaires...
1 IPAQ =
-
-
- 4 options
age -

LONG version looks at…
SHORT version looks at…

A

1 International Physical Activity Questionnaire

  • can look btw different countries
  • assess in LAST 7 days
  • 1 phone 2 self-admin 3 long 4 short version

Age - 15 - 69 yrs old

L… work, transport, domestic&yard work, leisure -time PA
+ Time spent sitting
[27Q’s]

S... Vig PA ( # days / duration) - 8 MET
Mod PA ( # days / duration) - 4 MET
 Walking ( # days / duration) - 3.3 MET
Sitting on weekdays (duration)
\+ work, transport, domestic, leisure PA

Has a scoring protocol in graph like form - multiplies freq x duration x MET (based on intensity) = Total PA score (MET mins per wk)

Then go to interpretation chart for results

2 GPAQ =

  • developed by
  • for
  • administered how
  • PA domains covered
A
2 = Global PA Questionnaire
- by WHO
- for adults
- by face to face interview
- domains are work, transport, leisure + sed beh
\+ PA in TYPICAL week

Q

3 PA Recall Questionnaire
ex: recall last 7 days

EX Jane on Slide 19

A
  • list of common activities & ‘others’
  • whether did the activity
  • if YES, # of days
  • on avg # of min (on days the activity was done)
  • go to compendium of PAs - look at assigned MET value
  • MET-mins/wk for MVPA (from compendium)

EX - 60 min basketball game = 60min x 8MET = 480MET min

Q

4 Godin & Shephard Leisure Time PA

  • administered…
  • MET values are…

Scoring:
Interpretation of score:
Limitations:

A
  • self- administered
  • typical 7 day
  • exercise for more than 15 min in leisure time
  • MET values are different from other questionnaires
    (strenuous = 9) (mod = 5) (mild = 3)

:
- combines M +VPA first THEN adds Mild on top of
Frequency of each category x MET value
EX: 3 x /wk strenuous x 9 = 27 units

: Interpretation of scores, using only moderate &
strenuous PAs -> refer to table

: Q’s ask about exercise which is more structured
not meaningful results without table
what is the 15 min bouts based on?
What is it meant by times / wk? (if 30min is done - is it 2x 15min or)

5 Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance System Questionnaire

  • developed by
  • for who
  • done how and how often
  • how is data used
  • what does the questionnaire ask?
  • use frame of reference for multiple Q’s goes Spec -> General
A
  • CDC
  • adults
  • phone survey - yearly
  • US states use data for public health, emerging health problems, look at comparing to objectives
  • asks more than PA (nutr, smoking) = lifestyle as a whole

Sedentary Questionnaires…
most focus on:

A

: frequency, duration, type (screen time vs transit)
- intensity is unnecessary

  • separates weekday from weekend
  • 9 different response categories of sed activities
  • add up total hrs of each category
