Lect 1: Intro Flashcards
(25 cards)
Anatomy
Study of structures of the body and the relationship of its parts
Gross anatomy
Regional or systematic anatomy
Microscopic anatomy
Cytology and histology
Very important rule to remember
Structure = function
What are the basic structural levels of the body?
Cells > tissues > organs > (organ) systems
What are the different types of tissues?
Epithelia, connective tissue, muscle tissue, and neural tissue
Role of Epithelia (epithelium)
- covers exposed surfaces
- lines internal pathways
Role of connective tissue
- fill internal spaces
- provide structural support
- store energy
Role of muscle tissue
Contracts to produce active movement
Role of neural tissue
- electrical impulses
- carry info
What is the anatomical position?
Standard position body is always assumed to be in. Body erect, feet together, upper limbs at side, fingers extended, palms facing forward (supinate)
Supine
Lying face up
Prone
Lying face down
Superior
Top
Inferior
Bottom
True or false. Left and right always refer to the sides of the observer
False. Left and right always refer to the sides of the subject
Medial vs lateral
Medial: middle of body
Lateral: further away from body
*horizontally
Proximal vs distal
Proximal is closer to the body core
Distal is further away from body
Dorsal/posterior vs ventral/anterior
Dorsal: back
Ventral: front
Cranial vs caudal
Cranial: head
Caudal: butt area
What are the three different planes of the body?
Frontal plane, sagittal plane, and transverse plane
Where is the dorsal cavity located in the body?
It extends from the cranial to lower back (posterior)
Where is the ventral cavity located?
Goes from thoracic cavity to lower belly (anterior)
What are the parts of the cavity wall for the heart?
Parietal pericardium, pericardial fluid, and visceral pericardium
