Q

What would be defined by the oral masticatory mucosa that surrounds the cervical portion of teeth and covers the alveolar process of the maxilla and mandible?
What components make up this tissue

A

The Gingiva
- Marginal Gingiva (free/unattached)
- Attached Gingiva
- Alveolar Mucosa
- Mucogingival Junction (MCJ)

Q

Marginal Gingiva vs Gingival Margin

A

Marginal Gingiva = free tissue surround the teeth facially, lingually and interproximally
Gingival Margin = most coronal portion of the gingiva (scalloped outline of the teeth)

Q

What is the gingival sulcus formed by? What is a healthy measurement? What is it called if it’s diseased?

A

The sulcular epithelium and the coronal end of the JE. 1- 3 mm. Periodontal Pocket

Q

What divides the free gingiva from the attached gingiva? What percentage of people have this?

Q

What occupies the interdental space apical to tooth contact? What is it attached to the tooth by? What part of the gingiva is it a part of?

A

The interdental gingiva (papilla), attached by the JE and connective tissue fibers. It is a part of the free gingiva

Q

Where would you find the gingival col? What kind of epithelium is it made up by? When is this absent?

A

Interproximal contact areas, made up by NON-keratinized epithelium thus is very susceptible to inflammation and disease progress. It is absent when. teeth are not in contact, and is the main reason we floss

Q

What serves as a route of passage of fluid and cells from the connective tissue into the the sulcus AND for bacterial products from sulcus into the connective tissue? What is the approximate length?

A

The junctional epithelium, which is 1 mm long

Q

Healthy Gingiva vs Diseased (color, consistency, surface texture, contour, size)

A

Color: Health = coral pink/consistent with skin pigmentation (amalgam tattoos affect color but still are healthy)
Disease = Bright red/blue/pink if fibrotic tissue
Consistency: Health: firm/resilient
Disease = soft, spongy, dents, bleeds, fibrotic
Surface Texture: Health = Free gingiva: Smooth, attached: stippled
Disease = loss of stippling, shiny, nodular, hyperkerototic
Contour: Health = knife-edged, peaked and pointed interproximally
Disease = Bulbous, irregular, rounded
Size: Health = free: near CEJ adhering closely
Disease = enlarged/inflamed from excess fluid

Q

What is the attached gingiva attached to? What demarcates the transition from attached gingiva to mucosa? How wide is this?
