Treatment goals
A
- provide tools and skills (confidence, autonomy) to reach their goals
- not to eliminate the problem, just provide coping skills

A
- get the client and the therapist’s perspective
- i.e. with spiders, what is the part of the spider that the client finds so fearful to tailor the protocol to the client

Normal vs abnormal fear
A
- we have fear to avoid something unpleasant
-it is normal in the sense that alot of people experience it and it can be healthy - ## it is not normal when it interferes with your life

What causes anxiety
A
- a negative experience with the feared object
- somebody telling you that you should be afraid
- people modelling fearful behaviour
- learning that someone else has had a negative experience
- bullying
- parenting (parental anxiety or depression)
- low SES
- ## prenatal prrorgramming

Anxiety causal mechanisms
A
- maladaptive cognitive strategies, classical operant conditioning, negative core beliefs, negative automatic thoughts

A
- effortful control, sensitive parenting styles, secure attachment style, parental recognition of problems, positive friendships etc.

- attention training, CBT, CBT and medication, exposure, modelling, education

- modeling
- exposure tasks
- imaginal and/or in vivo treatment

Timing of exposure
A
- for children and adolescents we do not yet fully know how to approach it
- also they have parents and parents get afraid of their children doing exposure therapy which is why you start exposure later
- children are still developing so you help them build skills to help them cope with anxiety
