What system are the brain and spinal cord a part of?
Central nervous system (CNS)
What system are the cranial and peripheral nerves a part of?
Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
What detects external & internal changes?
Sensory function
What analyses & makes decisions based on voluntary and involuntary responses?
Integrative function
What initiates motor movement & glandular secretions?
Motor function
Largest part of the brain. It contains the cerebral cortex and subcortical regions
Cerebrum
Located in the posterior region of the brain, it is mainly responsible for balance and coordination
Cerebellum
Contains the midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata. It communicates with the PNS to control involuntary processes such as breathing and heart rate
Brainstem
What is the outer layer of the cerebrum composed of?
The cerebral cortex
How many hemispheres is the cerebrum separated into?
Two
What are the cerebral hemispheres connected by?
A large fibre bundle called the corpus callosum
What are the four functionally and anatomically distinct lobes of the brain?
Frontal, Parietal, Temporal and Occipital
Which lobe is in charge of higher cognitive functions (e.g. decision making and problem solving) and some features of language/ voluntary movement?
Frontal lobe
What lobe of the brain integrates information from the visual pathway, co-ordinates motor movement and interprets sensory information?
Parietal lobe
Which lobe interprets speech, hearing, object recognition and emotion?
Temporal lobe
Which lobe processes primary visual information?
Occipital lobe
Brain regions that lie underneath the cortex
Subcortical regions
What are the subcortical regions responsible for?
Memory, emotions, motor movement & processing sensory information
