What are nutrients?
Nutrients are active elements of foods utilised in the functioning of the body.
In what ways do they allow the body to function?
Substances that allow your body to make energy, build
and maintain tissues and regulate bodily processes
What are the three macro nutrients?
Carbohydrates, proteins, lipids. They are needed in LARGE amounts.
(they provide energy in the form of calories)
what are micro nutrients
Vitamins, minerals, and trace elements
are essential as they are not produced in the body. They are needed in small amounts.

consuming nutrients inappropriate

4 calories per gram
How many calories per gram does fat provide?
9 calories per gram

Each person needs different requirements based on
- age, Gender
- Pregnancy and lactation
- Illness and disease
- Physical activity
- Genetics
What are dietary reference values?

requirements of different groups of healthy people.

How can you determine DRV values?
By using reference nutrient intakes
