Lecture 1/2 Flashcards
(14 cards)
what is human geography
the study of the spatial organization of human activity and of people’s relationships with their environment
*describe/explain variations from place to place
describe what a place is
place
- developed
- contains things (people)
- dynamic
- created by human interactions
- engaging / place you want to visit
- learn how to think/behave there
- structure daily routines
describe a space
space
- empty
- can contain multiple places
- natural / freely occuring
what is the study of geography
involves the study of the earth as created by natural forces and modified by human action
2 main branches of geography
- physical
= natural process of earth and their outcomes
ex. climate, landforms - human
= spatial organization of human activities & their relationships to enviro
ex. population change, enviro pollution
methods and tools used in human geography (4)
- fieldwork
- laboratory experiments (info from fieldwork)
- archival searches (historical)
- remote sensing (earths surface)
steps of geographical research (4)
- starting point = observation!
- methods and tools (data gathering)
- visualization/ representation
- charts / diagrams/ graphs - analysis of data (most important step!!!)
- quantitative / qualitative
2 tools geographers use in research
- maps
- GIS
quantitative vs qualitative
quant
- numbers/ statistics
- measure and test
qualit
- observation / words
- uses common data
describe maps
= 2D representations that use lines and symbols to convey information
- express particular interpretations and so all maps are social products
- display experiences/ intentions of the author
3 types of maps
normal
= reflect a general view, most common
topographical
= portray permanent features
ex. buildings, highways
thematic
= portray particular events / conditions
ex. election results
describe GIS
= computer hardware/ software to organize spatially coded data
ex. postal codes
- can produce very detailed maps
- continuously updated
spatial analysis 5 key concepts
- location
- distance
- space
- accessibility
- spatial interaction
what is cognition
key to spatial / geographical analysis !!!!
- acquiring knowledge & understanding through thought + experience + senses
