Lecture 1: Introduction Flashcards
(3 cards)
1
Q
What are the 7 Characteristics of Living Things?
A
- Made up of Cells (Single or multicellular)
- Complex and Ordered
- Respond to external stimuli
- Grow, Develop and Reproduce (Important, if not met isn’t considered alive)
- Use Energy to carry out tasks
- Homeostatic (Tend to maintain a dynamic equilibrium to stay within a comfortable state) 7. Adapt to their environment (Adapt at the individual and evolutionary/species level)
2
Q
What is the Hierarchy of Ordered Life (5 Steps)
A
- Cellular
- Organismal (Tissues, Organs, Systems)
- Population Level (Population, Species, Community)
- Community Level (Ecosystem)
- Environment Level (Biosphere)
3
Q
Two Types of Scientific Reasonings
A
Deductive: General Big Picture Principles to Predict Scientific Results (Most mammals have hair, therefore all mammals have hair)
Inductive Reasoning: Specific Examples to Prove a General Hypothesis (All our subjects responded this way therefore most people in the population will respond this way)
