Lecture 11 - Complex Stress & Strain Flashcards
(9 cards)
How is the plane stress system represented?
A plane stress system is represented by a combination of two normal stress components (σ_x,σ_y) and a shear stress component(𝜏xy)
How can we find stresses acting on an inclined plane?
By resolution of forces
How will stresses vary?
- Stresses will vary with angle θ
How can you find maximum and minimum normal stress?
Differentiate with respect to θ and set equal to 0
What can Mohr’s circle help us to do?
Helps find stresses on an inclined plane
What does every point on the circumference of Mohr’s circle represent?
Represents the state of stress (normal, shear) on a given plane
What is the angle of rotation between two set of stresses in Mohr’s circle?
The angle of rotation between two sets of stresses in the Mohr’s circle is twice the corresponding angle of rotation in the real physical system
Where does max and min shear stress occur?
The maximum shear stresses occur at the lower and upper extremes of the circle
What are principle stresses represented by on Mohr’s circle?
Principal stresses are represented by the points where the circle intersects σx’ axis at τx’y’ = 0
