Lecture 16 Flashcards
(20 cards)
Define Periodontium
The periodontium is the specialized tissues that surround and support the teeth, maintaining them in the maxillary and mandibular bones
List the components of Periodotium
- Cementum
- Alveolar bone
- Periodontal ligament
- Gingiva
Describe the Cementum
Outer protective layer of the root
Describe the Alveolar Bone
Thickened ridge of bone that contains the tooth sockets (dental alveoli) on the jaw bones
Describe the Periodontal ligament
Holds the tooth in place
Describe the Gingiva
External soft connective tissue, clinically visible, holds tissue against teeth during mastication
What is the Gomphosis?
- A joint that binds the teeth to bony teeth sockets in the maxillary bone and mandible.
- Have their origin from ectomesenchyme, i.e., the dental follicle
Define Cementum
Thin layer of mineralised tissue covering the external surface of teeth roots
What is the foundation for Dentine?
Dentine (Inner surface)
Is Cementum Avascular or Vascular?
Avascular and has no innervation
Describe the composition of Cementum
- Mineral (hydroxyapatite)
- Protein (collagen)
What percentage is the organic components of the Cementum?
90% is Type I Collagen (protein) – like dentine;
other collagens (types III, XII, etc)
What are 3 types of cells of Cementum?
1) Cementoblasts
2) Cementocytes
3) Osteoclast/Odontoclast
