Lecture 2 Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is an equation?
A mathematical statement that asserts the equality of two expression, there should be an equal sign
What is the purpose of an equation?
To find the value of variables to make the statement true
What is a function?
A relation between a set of inputs and a set of possible output. Often written as f(x) = expression.
What is the purpose of a function?
To show how one quantity depends on another, showing how the output changes as the input does.
inequality?
What is a linear equation and what will it produce on a graph?
Sum, such as 2x + 3y + 1,consisting of first powers of the variables and a number. When graphed, a linear equation will
always produce a straight line
What is a non-linear equation and what will it produce on a graph??
Sum where the highest power of the variable is greater than 1, or variables are multiplied (e.g., xy). When graphed, a linear equation will
always produce a non-straight shape.
