Lecture 2 Flashcards
Benefits of PA
What did Jeremy Morris find about train conductors VS train drivers
Conductors had about half the incidence of MI
and a much lower risk of death than the drivers.
How does regular physical activity benefit cardiovascular health?
Physical activity strengthens the heart, improves blood circulation, lowers blood pressure, and reduces the risk of heart disease.
What effect does exercise have on cholesterol levels?
Exercise helps raise HDL (good) cholesterol and lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, which benefits overall heart health.
How does physical activity contribute to weight management?
Physical activity burns calories, increases metabolism, and helps maintain or achieve a healthy weight by balancing energy intake and expenditure.
What is the benefit of combining exercise with a balanced diet for weight management?
Combining exercise with a balanced diet promotes sustainable weight loss, prevents obesity, and supports overall health.
How does physical activity benefit muscles and bones?
Physical activity builds muscle strength, enhances bone density, and helps prevent conditions like osteoporosis.
What type of exercises are most beneficial for bone health?
Weight-bearing and resistance exercises, like walking and strength training, are especially beneficial for building and maintaining bone density.
What effect does physical activity have on blood sugar levels?
Physical activity helps lower blood sugar levels by improving insulin sensitivity, which is beneficial for managing and preventing diabetes.
Why is exercise important for individuals with diabetes?
Exercise helps regulate blood glucose, reducing the risk of complications associated with diabetes, like cardiovascular disease.
What is a Subjective Method?
Definition of subjective: based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.
Examples: self-reported measures from questionnaires and diaries
What is a Objective Method?
Definition of objective: not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and
representing facts.
Examples: pedometers, accelerometers, and heart rate monitors.
Feasibility
is the degree of being easily or conveniently done
Validity
is accurately measured in a quantitative
study
Skinfold Measurement
A technician uses calipers to measure the
thickness of a fold of skin at several different
sites.
Advantages: Inexpensive
Disadvantages: Unreliable from technician to
technician
BIA
This test uses a small, harmless, electrical
current to measure the electrical resistance of
the body.
A current will flow faster and more easily
through the parts of the body composed mostly
of water (blood, urine, muscle) than through
bone, fat, or air
Hydrostatic Weight
Also referred to as underwater weighing, the test is
based on the principle that fat tissue is less dense
than muscle and bone
A person is weighted underwater, then on land, and
the results are compared
Air Displacement Plethysmography
With air-displacement plethysmography, the
volume of an object is measured indirectly by
determining the volume of air it displaces
inside an enclosed chamber
(plethysmograph).
The device used to measure is called the BodPod
Dexa
Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), Measures compartments/multiple regions: fat mass,
fat distribution pattern, and bone density.
Procedure is simple; takes only 15 minutes to
administer
