Lecture 2/3 Flashcards
(18 cards)
Personal vs. Professional space
there is an overlap due to community size and community location
Personal space
everything outside of the workplace
- leisure time, household management, family, relationships
Professional space
work activity and the work environment
Anonymity
much easier in a large urban centre
- very difficult to achieve in a small community
Vocation vs Profession
vocation: someone who feels called to do that work (priest, pastor, someone with religious value in some aspects)
- few boundaries
- works through passion
money isn’t an issue
- voluntarily
Northern Factors (7)
high visibility high accessibility elevated community status multiple relationships intense personalized scrutiny of practice increased responsibility isolation from peers
What are the issues that Delaney & Brownlee discussed?
- issues stemming from limited supervision & limited collegial feedback
- issues stemming from practicing beyond competence
- issues stemming from dual relationships
- issues stemming from having access to too much information
- issues stemming from professional drift
- issues stemming from community adaptation
Why do we have codes of ethics and practice guidelines?
to protect the client
to protect ourselves
create a certain standard of expectation
If they don’t make sense in the north, should we practice without them?
some elements are negotiable, others are quite strict
Framework for Ethical Decision Making (7)
what is the issue?
who is involved and in what ways?
what are the options?
what are the likely or intended consequences for those might be affected?
what are the unintended consequences of each option?
what serves as the best guide for making a decision?
what changes could be made at what levels?

Advantages and Benefits in northern practice
easy access to your client
- regarding assessments, intervention, and evaluation
High Visibility
lack of privacy in small communities and you may feel vulnerable to public scrutiny
Consequences of High Visibility
issues of congruence arise
the social worker may become increasingly circumspect and isolated
spontaneity may suffer
family members and possibly friends may come under this influence
self-consciousness and anxiety or stress may result

Consequences of High Accessibility
there may be an element of fear and anxiety that stems from issues of personal safety and security
these fears apply to family members
there is a sense that you never leave work unless you physically leave the community
a degree of hostility or antagonism can develop toward the community and it may not feel like home
Elevated Community Status
in small communities, levels of education may not be as high and there are generally few professionals
- this creates a degree of status or importance for the social worker
Consequences of Elevated Community Status
- there is a pressure to perform beyond capacity and capability
- one can develop an unrealistic self-concept or self perception
- there may be unrealistic expectations
